Bah Hum Bug

“Are you serious?”….were my words to the mall Santa on Saturday afternoon.  My boys were afraid of him and wouldn’t go to him, so Dave & I walked them up to Santa ourselves.  I said to Santa “can you please say “ho, ho, ho” for them because they would love that?”

(Remember my boys don’t say too many words, and this is their first encounter (that they remember) with Santa.  So they associate Santa right now with “ho, ho, ho” and “prizes” (for presents).)

Do you know what Santa said to me?  He said “no” and further explained that he’s not allowed to say “ho, ho, ho” anymore because it’s politically incorrect because it’s a derogatory term for “working ladies” and it offends them.  ”Are you serious?”, I had to reply.  He was as upset about it as I was.

He further explained that he’s not allowed to say “Merry Christmas” anymore either.  (As a side note, he told me that he’s Jewish and doesn’t have a problem saying it himself.)  So, what is there left for him to say?  I thought Santa always greeted children by saying “Ho, ho, ho, Merry Christmas”.  Come on, just reading that made you flash back to your childhood and you can hear Santa saying that, can’t you?  Not anymore.

Bah Hum Bug, is all I have to say about that.

PS, since it’s also politically incorrect to bring your own camera and not buy their $15 4×6 picture, I have no pictures to share.  Not to mention the boys basically took their candy cane and ran anyway.

Weekend Fun

My mom & nephew, Braydon, came to stay with us this weekend since Dave was out of town. We shopped, and shopped and shopped.  And we did several fun activities for the kids including playing at Castaway Cafe & McDonalds.  Mom and I saw the movie “The Secret Life of Bees”.  It was sooo good!  We decorated my Christmas tree.  And we went downtown Brighton on Saturday for the Holiday Glow event and saw Santa Claus arrive and turn on the lights of the city.  It was super cold, but we had fun.

Between the Christmas shopping, decorating the tree, and seeing Santa Claus it really put me in the holiday spirit!

Sunday Night Adventure

Well, I’m going to have to post out of order for the first time.  I had planned to work on my pictures from the weekend and post those.  Had a fabulous weekend visit with my mom & nephew, Braydon.  My night got cut short though and now at midnight I don’t have time to go through all the pictures.  So, I will do that in a day or so.

Instead, I can post a few pictures from Brady, Tyler & my adventurous evening.  Ok, it’s 6:30pm, just the 3 of us.  I’m wondering how I can pass the time this evening.  I remembered that my mom bought the boys a cookie cutter set.  And she gave us about 10 little jars of cookie decoration sprinkle thingys.  Ok, make cookies!

So, we the boys helped me make and decorate sugar cookies.  Here’s a few pictures below.  They loved it.  And I actually let them make as much of a mess as they wanted (hard to believe, huh?!).

Disclaimer to Lisa & Sara who will be coming over tomorrow and probably eating the cookies:  The cookies you will eat were not made or decorated or slobbered on by the boys.  I gave them their own dough to make their own cookies.  Yours are safe to eat.

So that took up the whole evening and was a lot of fun.  Unfortunately, it didn’t end quite so well.  Brady slipped in the tub when he was horsing around. It wasn’t serious, but I decided to take him to the urgent care because he cut his chin and there was that fatty tissue from the inside coming out of the cut.  They decided to glue the wound instead of giving him stitches.

Making & decorating cookies for the first time + me alone, with twin toddlers, in the ER at 11pm….quite a Sunday night adventure.  And I thought we’d be bored tonight.

The boys were good as can be in the ER.  Brady didn’t fuss or cry a single time and let the doctor fix him up.  And Tyler sat quietly in the chair and watched it all.  Here’s Brady lifting his chin when he was done to show you his mended boo-boo.

A Fun Day With Great-Grandma Doorn

Last weekend when I was in Grand Rapids, the boys & I spent a fun day with my Grandma Doorn.  We played at Grandma’s for awhile and Grandma got out her little tub of kids toys which the boys loved.  We also went out to eat for lunch together.  And we went over to my cousin, Shelley’s house, to visit her and see her new 5 day old baby, Addison.

The boys can’t say grandma, so they called my mom “mama” while I was away in Hawaii.  So when Grandma Doorn called herself “Grandma Great”, the boys started calling her “mama ga”.  Later that day I said to the boys “did you have fun today?”.  Tyler thought about it and burst out saying “mama ga”.

Can’t wait to see you again over the holidays, Grandma!  Thanks for a super fun day!

I’m not winning any awards with this first blurry picture, but I thought Grandma looked very nice in it.  Also, the last picture is Grandma with her newest Great-Granddaughter, Addison.  To see more pics of Addison, check out my photography blog.

Hold on to your chair!

Why did I put that as the subject?  Because if you know me well enough you’ll need to hold onto your chair when I tell you that…..I put up my Christmas tree last night!!!  The reason that is so shocking is because I haven’t put up a Christmas tree in about 8 years.  Not to to mention I’m pretty proud that I put it up so early!  I plan to fully enjoy it given all the work it takes.  Plus, I’m actually excited about it.

Brady & Tyler helped me put it up last night and they had a lot of fun.  They keep saying “ball” because they want to hang the ornaments (and they look like balls).  But, can you believe that my trip to Meijer today was unsuccessful because they don’t sell the metal hanging thingies to hang the ornaments!  What?  So I’m on a mission to find them so I can finish decorating it.  It’s bigger than I expected too!  I bought the pre-lit tree, along with all the decorations last year, the day after Christmas, and got a heck of a deal.  For those that know me, you don’t have to hang on to your chair for that comment….that’s no surprise at all.  LOL

Stay tuned for pictures as soon as I’m done decorating it.
