Happenings

Well, I survived 7 days with sick kids and Dave being out of town.  He just got back last night.  I never mention when he’s out of town because you never know who reads this blog and might take advantage of knowing I’m home alone.  Smart, huh?

We are leaving for Utah this afternoon to visit Dave’s family.  This is the first time we’ve flown with the boys after 2 years of age and have to pay for tickets for them.  It will be nice for them to have their own seats though and not have to sit on our lap.

Tyler has a mild cold still (left over from his pneumonia) and just yesterday Brady was diagnosed with pneumonia now.  I brought him in to check his ears because he’s been up half the night for the past 4 nights again.  Sure enough, his ear infection did come back, but then they realized he had pneumonia too.  So this trip will likely be more challenging than usual.  The doctor said within 24 hours of the meds that he shouldn’t be contagious and told me to go still.  So we’re coming!

The boys are excited to go on the airplane again.  I think this is the 5th time they’ve flown there in their little lives.  We stay with Dave’s mom when we go and she enjoys having us around.  We’ll visit with Dave’s kids, Nich, Zach, Janessa, Aaron & his new wife Jenn.  Aubrey & family is still in Vegas, waiting for Lance’s government job transfer to Salt Lake, so we won’t get to see them again this time.  Soon though!!

While I’m there I have one photo session of a newborn & family (Dave’s nephew’s family), so that will be fun.  And I’m having lunch with some of the ladies from my online Biggest Loser group that live in the area, so it will be really fun to meet some of them in person.  And on our way back we have a 4 hour layover in Denver (doing anything to keep the airfaire price lower since we’re paying for 4 tickets now) and my best friend from college, Cindy, might be able to come meet us at the airport for lunch.  I haven’t seen Cindy in so many years that I can’t even remember how many.

So, this trip should be a lot of fun for many reasons!  Let’s just hope the sleep deprivation that I encounter every time we go there (boys do not sleep well there) won’t kill me.

Will have lots of pics to post when we get back next Wednesday.  Have a good weekend!

Hands On Museum

Last week I discovered the Hands On Museum in Ann Arbor (just a 1/2 hour drive away). It’s a whole museum dedicated to kids. Everything is “hands on” learning. There’s a huge pre-school area and 4 floors of fun & learning for the kids. I decided to become a member and bought the annual membership for the whole family, so we will be going a bunch in the next 12 months. The boys absolutely love it there. I’ve taken them twice already within the past week. Even the bathroom is made for kids with a low toilet and a sink that’s barely off the floor. There is so much to learn and do there! The boys love checking out all of the exhibits and trying them on their own. I can’t believe I didn’t discover this place before! I brought my little camera so I could capture a little bit of it to show you.

Also, click here on the word “video” VIDEO for a short video of the boys at the water table. You can hear Tyler say “Mom, what color is this?”, just like I mentioned in my last post. I didn’t even realize that’s what he asked me until I just watched the video. He asks me it all the time. I think I’m the only one that can understand him though. :)

Ooooo-range

Tyler and Brady are learning their colors. They do pretty well telling me which color something is when I ask them. Tyler likes to bring things to me and ask me what color it is. Then he says “Good Mama” when I tell him. Ironically the word “blue” was one of the first colors they could say quite a while ago and they called everything blue. But now, it’s one of the only colors that they can’t get. When I hold up something blue they call it every other color. Interesting.

My favorite color that the boys say….Oooo-range. Because it comes out so very funny, and they make the funniest face.

Here’s Brady showing & telling you “orange”.

Surprise Visits to My Grandparents

When I was in Florida for the Super Bowl there was a Saturday activity for spouses which was a day trip to a winery. Not really my kind of thing. So, I grabbed a map and figured out that two sets of my Grandparents were approximately a 2 hour drive from my hotel. Then I figured out that the grandparents were just 7 miles apart. They are both “snowbirds”, which means they are retirees who live in Michigan, but go to Florida for the winters. Need you ask why? I guess at some age you decide you’ve had enough of these Michigan winters.

Anyway, so I rented a car, drove 2 hours away, visited with each set of my grandparents for about 1.5 hours each, then drove 2 hours back to the hotel. What a crazy trip. But I would not have done it any differently. It was so good to see them both and make their day special!

First up was Grandma & Grandpa Terpstra. They are in the process of trying to sell their mobile home in FL, so I was glad to see it for the first time. They’ve been spending winters in their trailer for 19 years now! WOW! Grandma made me a nice lunch and we had a fabulous visit.

Next up was Grandma Doorn & Walter. Walter & Grandma were married a couple of years ago. Both of them lost their spouses (including my grandpa) and they are blessed to have found each other. It was Grandma’s birthday that day and she was surprised when I called her and said I was on my way over to see her. As you look at these two pictures can you just feel the sunshine shining down on us? I love it!!! I normally would crop these pictures in more, but there’s no way I wanted to crop out that sunshine.

Batteries vs Brothers

So, when February throws you a day with temps in the 50’s, us Michiganders come out of hiding. What was the first thing Tyler and Brady wanted to do? Ride their motorized four wheelers.

The problem: The rechargeable batteries weren’t charged and the four wheelers wouldn’t go. Tyler was very upset about this.

Brady says, “Don’t worry brother, I will fix it”.

But alas, when your batteries are dead, it’s nice to have a twin brother to help your four wheeler go.
